Academic Integrity & Tutoring Policy

Smarty Marty tutoring is intended to teach you how to do the work better, not to do the work for you.

The objective is to strengthen legal reasoning, research, writing, analysis, exam technique and professional skills while preserving the student’s own authorship and responsibility.

Depending on your package, assistance may include:

• explaining legal concepts;
• discussing cases and legislation;
• helping identify issues;
• teaching legal problem-solving techniques;
• discussing IRAC, ILAC or other analytical structures;
• reviewing assessment instructions;
• discussing marking criteria;
• providing feedback on structure;
• identifying weaknesses in reasoning;
• explaining how writing could be clearer;
• discussing research approaches;
• reviewing lecturer feedback;
• practising hypothetical questions;
• examination preparation;
• drafting exercises; and
• helping you develop your own work.

Smarty Marty will not knowingly:

• write an assessment for you;
• substantially rewrite an assessment so that it no longer reflects your own authorship;
• complete an examination;
• answer a restricted take-home examination on your behalf;
• impersonate you;
• fabricate references;
• provide false citations;
• undertake prohibited collaboration;
• assist in circumventing university assessment conditions;
• complete work that your institution requires you to perform independently; or
• misrepresent tutoring output as your unaided work where disclosure is required.

Where a package includes draft review, feedback may identify:

• unclear analysis;
• structural issues;
• weak reasoning;
• missing issues;
• areas requiring further research;
• expression problems;
• citation issues;
• gaps between the work and marking criteria.

The client remains responsible for making substantive revisions and submitting their own work.

Academic-integrity requirements differ between institutions, courses and assessments.

The client is responsible for checking applicable requirements.

If there is uncertainty, Smarty Marty may require the client to confirm that the requested assistance is permitted.

If an educational institution restricts the use of AI or external assistance for a particular assessment, those requirements must be followed.

Smarty Marty will not knowingly assist a client to disguise prohibited AI-generated or externally generated work as their own.

Smarty Marty may refuse, pause or terminate assistance where a request reasonably appears inconsistent with academic-integrity requirements.

Where appropriate, the client may instead be offered general educational guidance that does not compromise assessment integrity.
